Catholic Schools Week 2008

Assumption School

Catholic Schools:

January 2008

Theme:  Catholic Schools Light the Way

We will be celebrating Catholic Schools the month of January rather then celebrating the last week of January as we have done in the past.  There will be a variety of activities throughout the month of January.  There is a schedule of events with some explanation of the event.  As always, if you have any questions or need clarification please let us know.

Chairpersons:  Mrs. Mary Mitchell (K) & Sister Joan Marie (Grade 2)

Schedule of Activities

January 4th                 First Friday Mass (9:00 a.m. in Church)

                                    Geography Bee (Grades 4-8)

January 9th                 Special Person Lunch

This is an opportunity for your child to have lunch with a special person (mom, dad, aunt, uncle, friend, and godmother, godfather, neighbor and so on.)  They can either eat lunch they bring from home or the special person can bring lunch from a favorite place, such as, Subway, McDonalds, pizza and so on.  There is no hot lunch served on this day.  If your child will not be eating with a special person, please be sure they bring a lunch to school this day.

This will be held at the main campus from 11:30a.m.-1:00 p.m. and at the East Campus from 12:45-1:30 p.m..  The times have been split to allow time for those “special persons” who need to visit both campuses.  Grades PK-2nd will eat at 11:30 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. and Grades 3-5 will eat at 12:15 – 1:00 p.m.   Special persons are to meet in the Church Hall for this event.

January 14th               Disney Movie Day (9:30-11:30 a.m.)

This is a fun filled day when the children choose a “movie theater” (a classroom) to go and enjoy a movie with popcorn.  They will choose one movie to attend and travel to that room to watch it with friends from other grades.  This is a nice opportunity for the older students to mingle with the younger ones.

January 23rd              Grandparents’ Pancake Breakfast

This is a breakfast put on by the Home and School Association for grandparents.  This will take place in the Church Hall.  There are two sittings for this event and it is split up according to the student’s last name.  If your child’s last name begins with A-M, breakfast will be served at 9:00 a.m. If your child’s last name begins with N-Z breakfast will be served at 9:45 a.m.  Your child will sit with his/her grandparent(s) and enjoy a pancake breakfast with them.

January 25th               Essays (What Catholic School means to me) are due

This is the first year we will be doing this event.  Students are working with each classroom teacher to write/dictate short essays about what Catholic schools mean to them.  The students will not write names on the essays.  They will be number coded so the judges do not know who wrote the essay.  The essays will be judged by the teachers of a different grade.  There will be a winner chosen from each grade and their essays will be on display in the front foyer.  The winners will receive a gift certificate for ice cream.  The location has not been determined as of yet.

January 28th               Career Day

This is the first year we will be doing this event.  There are chairpersons in charge of obtaining guest speakers to visit classrooms to speak about their occupation.  They will speak according to the grade level and will interact with the students to answer any questions.

January 30th               Ron a Roll (6:00 – 8:00 p.m.)

This is an annual event run by Carol Fortin.  The children have an awesome time roller skating to music on this evening and quite a few adults enjoy the event as well.  More information will follow regarding this event so be on the lookout.

February 1st               Buddy Day

This is an event when the students pair up with another grade and work together on a special project.  The KinderBears buddy up with the Fifth Graders.  The First Graders pair up with the Third Graders and Grade Two pairs up with Grade Four.  Each teacher plans an activity that the students work together to do.  It is a great opportunity for students young and old to interact and have fun together.  It is priceless to watch the younger children try and read to the older ones when they are finished with the activity.
